Audubon Society plans Raritan Bayshore trip

The Monmouth County Audubon Society will sponsor a field trip along the Raritan Bayshore March 18. Scott Barnes, teacher and naturalist at Owl Haven Nature Center, Tennent, will be the trip leader.

Raritan Bay is a wintering and staging area for many species of ducks, such as Oldsquaw, Bufflehead and Red-breasted Merganser. Participants will be on the lookout for these and other winter waterfowl, as well as gulls and early migrants.

The group will meet at 9 a.m. in the commuter lot of the Atlantic Highlands Municipal Harbor, next to the tackle shop. The trip is open to members and nonmembers, and admission is free. Bring binoculars, spotting scopes, field guides and lunch. There will be travel by car to several locations along the Raritan Bay, so be prepared to drive. Participants should dress appropriately for cold and windy conditions.
