Cardinal coach Gary Dura is pleased with the girls track team’s 6-2 record after two wins Tuesday.
And the coach has even more reason to smile when you consider that many of the performers seem to be hitting their stride.
“We’re really happy about that record,” Dura said. “We had a good day Tuesday and 6-2 with three regular meets left shows us we’re doing well.”
The Cardinals beat Nottingham, 76-46, and West Windsor-Plainsboro, 86-36.
And to add to the impressive showing, they did it by posting numerous personal-best scores.
In the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, Christine Rivera finished in 1 minute, 12.3 seconds. She also won the 800 in 2:37.8.
Katelee Zapolski turned in her best performance to date in the 1,600, timing in a 5:49.
Both were also part of the 4×400 relay team — along with Amy Calvo and Katharina Frenzel — that remained undefeated with a time of 4:24.
“Zapolski and (Christine) Rivera both ran three races for us today,” Dura noted. “The two girls really had outstanding days for us and were a big part of our success today.”
Kathleen Rivera — Christine’s sister — continued the day of personal bests, by getting hers in the 400 with a time of 1:07.5. Calvo won the event with a 59.8.
Katherine Uyhazi had her best day ever in the high jump, leaping 4 feet, 10 inches. She also took the long jump with a mark of 15-6¼. Kathy Katowski hit her personal best in this event with a 15-5¼.
Eve Wong placed third in the 100 hurdles with a personal best of 17.3. Meanwhile in the 200, Kristin Ciosek (29.3) and April Spanicciano (29.4) both had their finest performances.
Nicole Fahrenfeld did the 3,200 in her best time ever (13:45), while Sammantha Breimann threw the discus a personal best 91-4.
Finally it was another sister-tandem scoring big for the Cardinals. Kate and Emily Smithson finished 1-2 respectively in the javelin.
The Smithson sisters were also a force behind the Cardinals’ victories April 26 over McCorristin, 97-24, and Hamilton, 67-55.
Kate Smithson broke her own school record in the javelin, with a throw of 118 feet. It also was the county’s best throw. Emily Smithson followed that up by finishing second.
