Jubilee will recall village’s ‘good old days’

MAIN STREET CORNER

The Good Old Days will be back in Lawrenceville for the second year in a row on Sunday, May 21, as Lawrenceville Main Street sponsors the second annual Lawrenceville Jubilee.
The jubilee will take place in the historic village of Lawrenceville from noon to 4 p.m., rain or shine.
The first jubilee last year was a smashing success. This year’s event promises to be even better. Once again, the spirit of Owen Johnson’s “The Lawrenceville Stories” will provide much of the inspiration for many of the day’s activities.
Last year, the pet parade, games with prizes and other children’s activities were a big hit with the younger set. The grown-ups had just as much fun visiting the improved historical district, participating in the five-kilometer run and sampling some of the most reasonably priced food in town. All of these will be back this year. Much of the delicious food will be provided by local merchants who will try to out-do themselves with festival flair.
The biggest hit for the kids at last year’s jubilee had to have been the moonwalk. Most adults will remember what it was like — you get to take your shoes off and bounce around in seeming weightlessness. Needless to say, the moonwalk will be back this year too.
Students from The Lawrenceville School contributed to the Good Old Days festivities by taking part in a suspenseful pancake-eating contest. This too was inspired by an episode from the “The Lawrenceville Stories” when Hungry Smeed defeated all comers by eating 45 “regulation-sized” pancakes.
The Lawrenceville Jubilee is brought to you by Lawrenceville Main Street (formerly the Main Street Project), a volunteer-driven, nonprofit, civic improvement association. Since its inception four years ago, Lawrenceville Main street has helped to bring about design improvements, increased traffic safety and increased promotional activities to the village, as well as welcoming 17 new businesses. Lawrenceville Main Street, an official Main Street New Jersey community, has received awards for its accomplishments from Lawrence Township, the Regional Planning Council and American Legion Post 414.
