An Alpine Court man is awaiting trial on charges of disorderly conduct for allegedly swearing repeatedly at an officer investigating a parking offense.
William D. Davis, 46, of Alpine Court, pleaded not guilty Monday to the charges. Police say Mr. Davis had parked illegally on Alpine Court and yelled profanity an officer who confronted him around 5:15 p.m. May 2.
Mr. Davis could not be reached for comment. His wife on Wednesday evening said her husband had been parked briefly to unload groceries from the car.
He parked a car with its passenger front and passenger rear windows open on the right side of the roadway and told police he was unloading packages from the car, police said.
The car should have been parked in the Alpine Court parking lot, police said.
But Ms. Davis said she understands that parking on the street no longer is illegal where her husband’s vehicle had been, and added that they plan to pursue legal action against the Police Department for what she called “harassment.”
The officer who confronted Mr. Davis said he intended initially only to warn Mr. Davis not to park there, but decided to issue a parking summons after Mr. Davis yelled at him.
“I (expletive) live here and I know you can’t park here, do you think I can’t read? All you (expletive) cops think you’re so (expletive) tough!” Mr. Davis allegedly said.
Mr. Davis ignored the officer’s request that he offer his credentials, drove into the Alpine Court parking lot and continued swearing at the officer, police said.
When the officer threatened to arrest him, Mr. Davis allegedly yelled, “Why don’t you shoot me? I bet you (expletive) want to! Come on! You think you are so bad!”
Two additional officers arrived on the scene and Mr. Davis was placed under arrest.
While being driven to police headquarters, Mr. Davis allegedly screamed, “Wait till I get out of here, boy! I’m going to the papers! I’m going to the TV! You are going to make front page! All the crime in Hillsborough and this is the best you can do! Did you make your quota? Such a big man, so tough!”
Mr. Davis was released at his own recognizance.
