Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a common ingredient in over-the-counter cough medicines that also has found popularity with some as a recreational drug.
If enough DXM is consumed, or taken in combination with other drugs, users experience a hallucinatory effect, according to the Internet Drug Index. But the drug also is very unstable, and can have unpredictable effects.
DXM is not listed as a controlled substance and can be found for sale on such online auction sites as E-bay.
