Newspapers’ parent company has record of media success
G
reater Media Inc. was born more than 40 years ago when Yale University graduates Peter A. Bordes and Joseph R. Rosenmiller purchased a small radio station in Southbridge, Mass., in 1956.
Several years later, the East Brunswick-based corporation got into the newspaper business when it purchased the weekly publication that is now the East Brunswick Sentinel and later added the Old Bridge-Sayreville Suburban to give the media company wider newspaper coverage in Middlesex County.
The company’s cable television business also began in Southbridge, Mass., in 1970. Just one year ago, Greater Media Inc. completed the sale of its 173,000-subscriber cable system in Massachusetts to Charter Communications and its 78,000-subscriber Philadelphia system to Comcast.
The company expanded its weekly newspaper coverage to Monmouth County in February 1981 when it purchased the News Transcript, a Freehold-based publication that was founded in 1888, from the Bergen Evening Record Corp. of Hackensack. Greater Media Inc. was the fourth owner of the newspaper.
The company would expand its Monmouth County coverage with the purchase of the Independent, serving the Matawan-Middletown-Holmdel area, in the mid-1980s, the creation of the Examiner, serving Western Monmouth County’s "panhandle" region in 1993, and the purchase of the Hub, serving Red Bank and the surrounding area, in 1999.
Greater Media Inc.’s newspaper operations are now located in the Juniper Plaza office complex at Route 9 and Three Brooks Road, Freehold Township, with the exception of the Hub, which operates out of offices in Red Bank.
Greater Media’s newspapers reach 175,000 homes in Central Jersey.
The company owns radio stations in Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit and New Jersey.
Bordes, who acquired Rosenmiller’s interest in the company in 1994, died July 19, 1999, at the age of 71.
The company also owns Greater Jersey Press, a commercial printing company in East Brunswick, where all of its newspapers are printed, and Greater StarLink Teleport, a satellite transmission facility in Detroit.
Greater Media maintains its corporate headquarters on Kennedy Boulevard, East Brunswick.
