Letter to the editor
To the editor:
I am writing in response to the article in your May 18, 2000 edition titled “Visions of a new ‘main street.’” I am in agreement with the redevelopment of Brunswick Pike south and improvements in this area. I am concerned, however, about the “traffic calming” changes discussed and the congestion that could occur on a route that presently handles the rush hour and Saturday traffic conditions.
It is true that the Route 1 Freeway has taken a major portion of this traffic off of Brunswick Pike. However, there is still a considerable amount that uses this road. I live in this area and would strongly object to creating the rush-hour congestion that presently occurs daily in the area of the village. The amount of daily vehicles that use Brunswick Pike should be determined, and whatever changes are made should not adversely affect the capacity handling of the route. Traffic back-ups and stopping of traffic due to the “slowing down” modifications instead of the present free-flow would cause increased air pollution in this area. Also, doing away with the jughandle at Whitehead Road and allowing “left turns” from Brunswick Pike would decrease safety and increase the risk of rear-end collisions.
Again, improving sidewalks, adding plants, ornamental lighting, crosswalks, etc. are welcomed. Creating bumper-to-bumper traffic and added air pollution is not welcomed. Please see that the improvements will not disrupt our present life-style.
Thank you for your consideration.
