The Maple Leafs, an under-10 roller hockey team, won the spring A division roller hockey championship at GoodSports USA in Aberdeen. The Leafs downed the Wings, 8-5, in the title game as Mark Riviera scored three goals. Sean Holton and Matt Guzzo scored two goals apiece and Garrett Black added another goal.

The championship is the Leafs’ fifth in the past eight sessions. Members of the team are: Holton and Anthony Gruber of East Brunswick; Riviera, of Howell; Garrett and Trevor Black of Monroe; Guzzo and T.J. Daya of Old Bridge; Anthony Stahl of Long Branch; and Frank Santimauro, Nick Spinelli and Nicholas Gradkowski, of Manalapan.

The Spotswood Soccer Club will be holding registration sessions on June 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and June 26 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Registration after June 30 will require a late fee. For information, call Dawn at 723-1294.

The Old Bridge Department of Parks, Recreation and Social Services will hold a summer roller hockey instructional program for youngsters between the ages of 5 and 12 on Wednesday and Thursday evenings beginning June 21. The nine week program instructs players on the finer points of skating, stick-handling, passing and shooting.

Players must wear full equipment and scrimmages will be included. Classes for players between 5-8 will be held on Wednesdays, classes for players between 9-12 will be held on Thursdays. Classes run from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

The cost is $70 for Old Bridge residents, $80 for nonresidents. Registration is being accepted at the Old Bridge Arena Pro Shop or at the Department of Parks, Recreation and Social Services in the municipal complex. For more information, contact John Piccolo at 721-5600, ext. 4025, or at 679-8339.

The Avalanche, an under-10 B Division team, won the winter II roller hockey championship at GoodSports, Aberdeen.

In the final the Avalanche downed the unbeaten Devils 6-4 as Mike Pokrywa posted the hat trick en route to garnering most valuable player honors. Pokrywa was joined in the scoring column by Vinnie Palumbo who had a goal and an assist, and Steven Montalbano and Corey Rutenberg who also tallied.

Jonathan Gorombey led a spirited defensive effort in front of goalie Billy Voutsinas who played an outstanding game.

Also playing well for the Avalanche were Danny Cuccinello, Patrick Soffientini and Robert Yezzi.

The head coach of the team is Vinnie Palumbo assisted by Mike Cuccinello and Steve Gorombey. The team mother is Georgiana Wilson.

The Old Bridge Rockets, an under-7 tournament soccer team, took first place at the Manalapan tournament.
