James Benson, 75, died Monday at New Jersey Veteran’s Memorial Home, Menlo Park.
Born in New York, he lived in Lawrenceville 12 years. He was a former mail handler for the U.S. Postal Service at Morgan Annex, N.Y.
Mr. Benson was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 101st Airborne Division as a combat medic. He participated in the D-Day invasion in Normandy, France. He received the Bronze Star, Silver Star and two Purple Hearts.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.
Son of the late James and Rose McGowan Benson, he is survived by his wife, Antoinette Russo Benso; three sons and daughers-in-law, James and Eileen of Staten Island, N.Y., Robert and Bernadette of Lawrenceville, Steven and Kimberly of Las Vegas; eight grandchildren, Robert, Tyler, Danielle, Elizabeth, Jaime and Patrick Benson, Christopher and Chad Jacobs; and other relatives.
Funeral will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at Poulson and Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville, with the clergy of St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church officiating.
Burial will be in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
