Volunteer to help your community
The Beacon is bringing you a series of portraits of local emergency services volunteers.
As we read about their dedication and willing commitment, it should make all of us ashamed to whine that we don’t have time to give even a few hours to help.
These people balance families and careers to help out their neighbors. That’s you, the residents of the Lambertville-New Hope area who need their help when your house catches on fire, your boat capsizes or your car crashes.
Where would you be without them? It’s not a matter of oh, someone else will do it. You are that someone else, and the squads and fire departments of our area desperately need your help.
Volunteerism continues to decline. One positive thing is schools now are exposing students to community service. We can only hope it reaps benefits in the future.
But these groups need our help now. Find out what you can do to help – whether it be in the kitchen or out on the front line, saving lives. Pick up your checkbook, too, while you’re at it and send a few dollars when you can spare it.
Remember, too, the number of active volunteers is one of those things that directly affects a squad or fire department’s insurance rating, and that translates to savings or increases in homeowner’s insurance.
Stop making excuses. Get involved. There is no "someone else" to do it.
