Marlboro announced its fall 2000 athletic tryouts schedule. Boys soccer (varsity, junior varsity and freshmen) will start on Aug. 22 with the freshmen at 4 p.m. and varsity/JV at 6. Girls soccer will start on Aug. 16 for the varsity/junior varsity/freshman programs. Starting time is 8-11 a.m. for all three.

Football will start on Aug. 15 with the varsity/junior varsity going from 2-6 p.m. and the freshman, 4-6 p.m. Girls’ tennis will start on Aug. 23 from 9-11:30 a.m. Boys’ cross country will go Aug. 23 at 9 a.m. and girls’ cross country on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. Gymnastics will start Aug. 29 at 9 a.m. Marching band is Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. All tryouts will be held at Marlboro High School.

Manalapan United, an U-14 girls soccer team, went through the Manalapan Memorial Day Tournament undefeated in winning the championship for the third straight year. United went 4-0, beating the Brick Sting, 1-0; Peninsula Eagles, 2-0; West Windsor Spinach, 4-1; and Toms Rivers Trice, 3-0. As in previous championship runs at the tournament, everyone played well and contributed to the victory.

The United are: Katherine Alfonso, Morgan Ball, Sarah Chomko, Joanna Fay, Laura Femenella, Cristin Grimm, Blair Gumnic, Erica Hartigan, Lindsay Kotula, Brianne McCulley, Debra Vento, Toni Ann White, Pamela Yellin, Melisa Braun, Katie Daley and Courtney Mason. Bob Gumnic coaches the girls.

The Battle of Monmouth Black Widow Spiders girls’ traveling soccer team is looking for several experienced and dedicated players to complete their roster. The Black Widows will play tournaments this fall, and a full league season and tournaments in the spring of 2001. Girls born after July 31, 1984, are eligible. The Monmouth County Park System will present Baseball Basics II at Dorbrook Park Recreation Area, Route 537, Colts Neck, July 24-28. The program is designed for intermediate players entering grades five and six. It focuses on developing skills and coordination for better performance on the field. A supervised swim period is included. Prior experience on a team or with formal instruction is suggested. Cost is $50 and preregistration is required.
