The Friends of New Jersey Vietnam Veterans will present its fifth annual Friends 5K Race on Aug. 12 at 8:30 a.m. in Holmdel. There will be a one-mile Run/Walk at 8:10. Big Brother Big Sisters (BBBS) of Monmouth County will sponsor its 11th annual Golf Outing on Sept. 21 at the Spring Lake Golf Club in Spring Lake. Last year scores of foursomes and tee sponsors combined to raise nearly $50,000 to help children in Monmouth County.

The event will begin with registration at 10:30 a.m., practice range and lunch, followed by 18 holes of golf starting at 12:30 p.m. For more information on the Golf Outing call 544-2224.

The 42nd annual Western Monmouth Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing will be held at the Shore Oaks Country Club, Howell, on Oct. 5. Breakfast and registration are at 7:30 a.m. with golf starting at 8:30.

Freehold Soccer League signups for its boys’ recreation league are on Thursday, July 13, from 5-8 p.m. at the Jackson Mill Road fields. Fee is $45. The Freehold Soccer League Pacers girls’ under-9 team won the Neptune Tournament on June 24-25, compiling a 2-0-2 record and prevailing on a goals-allowed tiebreaker (2 goals allowed in four matches). The Pacers were 3-1 as the second-place team in the top flight of the Sunburst Tournament in West Windsor June 10-11.

Freehold had a 3-4-3 spring record in the Premier Division of the Monmouth-Ocean Soccer Association.

Tryouts for a 10-year-old traveling baseball team will be held on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the YMCA Day Camp (Route 537 Millstone). The team plays home games in the Manalapan/Freehold/Millstone area. There is no residency requirement.

The unbeaten Gravediggers continued their winning ways last week in the Freehold Borough Women’s Softball League but it wasn’t easy.

The Gravediggers (9-0-1) jumped out to a 15-run lead on Ebony (3-6) but, had to hold on for a 19-14 triumph. Joy Guzik’s home run and a triple by Doreen Dailey were the big hits for the Gravediggers. But, it was timely hitting by Leslie Taylor, Joan Cinque, Kathy Locke and Kathy Uhrig that helped the Gravediggers jump out to the big lead early.

Ebony’s late rally was fueled by Lillie Love, Keisha Parish and Robyn Robinson.

The Brew Crew (7-4) erupted for 12 first-inning runs and never looked back on the way to a 23-7 win over the Freehold Self-Storage Rascals (0-9).

Nancy Skrobola led the Brewskies attack ripping a grand slam home run and recording six RBI on the night.

Carroll’s Cuts (5-4) broke open a close game with the Ball Busters (2-7) with eight runs in the last two innings for a 13-3 win. It was 5-3 in favor of Carroll’s before Donna Mayrose and Janet Carbin sparked the late-inning outburst with triples.

Higgins KAOS (6-2-1) had the bye week.

The Manalapan Red Dogs, an U-14 boys team that plays in the Monmouth-Ocean Soccer Association National 2 Division, needs one or two players to fill their roster for the fall season. Players must be born between 8/1/86 and 7/31/87 to be eligible. If interested, call Bob Sussman at 446-2905.

 

The Amateur Softball Association will conduct the New Jersey Garden State Games’ Softball tournaments in August. There will be tournaments for girls’ fast-pitch softball teams in the following age divisions: 18-and-under, 16-and-under, 14-and-under, 12-and-under and 10-and-under. Warinanco Park and Roselle will be the sites for the tournaments which will run from Aug. 5-6. Teams will be guaranteed four games.

There will also be men’s and women’s and co-ed slo-pitch tournaments at the same sites on Aug. 12-13 with the same four-game guarantee.

Hors d’oeuvres and open bar will follow at 12:30 p.m. with a putting contest at 1. Lunch and awards will start at 1:30.

There will be four hole-in-one contests with prizes of cash and exotic vacations, putting contests where every contestant is guaranteed a prize, as well as several long drive contests, including the opportunity to win a foursome at a local country club.
