LAMBERTVILLE – The City Council on Monday accepted the resignation of two-term Councilman Steve Frankel.
Mr. Frankel, formerly of Clinton Street, recently got married and has relocated with his new wife to Wynwood, Pa.
Councilwoman Cynthia Ege made the motion to accept "with regret" Mr. Frankel’s letter of resignation from the five-member council. His term expires Dec. 31, 2001.
City Clerk Mary Elizabeth Sheppard said the city’s Democratic Club has 15 days from July 17 to submit a name for the council to consider appointing to replace Mr. Frankel. He was a registered Democrat, as is the entire council.
The governing body has up to 30 days from the date it receives a response from the Democrats to vote on the appointment, which would be temporary to Dec. 31. Miss Sheppard explained that because Mr. Frankel resigned before Sept. 1, his permanent replacement would be determined by voters in the November general election.
Anyone interested in running for the one-year unexpired term must file a petition with a minimum of 25 signatures with the Hunterdon County Board of Elections by Sept. 20. Petitions are available at City Hall at 18 York St.
The county Republican and Democratic organizations also may submit one name each for placement on the November ballot, Miss Sheppard said.
Prospective candidates for either the temporary or permanent council vacancy must be a city resident and registered to vote.
