Rising Rutgers University sophomore Val Majewski, of Freehold, has been selected as a starting outfielder in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) All-Star game, set for Saturday, July 29, in Keene, N.H. Majewski, a member of the Eastern Tides, based in Middletown, Conn., is one of the starting outfielders for the East Squad.
Majewski is currently batting .285 in 34 games, with four home runs and 22 RBI. He also has six doubles, two triples and eight stolen bases and is ranked fourth in the league in slugging percentage (.457). The Tides are currently 13-23 on the season.
Majewski, a Big East Conference All-Rookie Selection in 2000, hit .286 with three home runs and 15 RBI in 91 at bats with the Scarlet Knights this past spring. Two of his three home runs came in Big East play, as he homered against Seton Hall and Notre Dame during the regular season.
The NECBL is one of eight wooden bat leagues sanctioned by the NCAA and partially funded by major-league baseball. Scouts representing most major league teams are expected to attend. Players from the eight-team league were divided into two all-star teams. The West Squad features players from the Torrington Twisters, Danbury Westerners, Middletown Giants and Manchester Silkworms, while the East Squad is made up of players from Keene, the Lowell All-Americans, Rhode Island Gulls and Eastern Tides.
