Once again it appears that the old adage is true that no good deed goes unpunished. I have just finished reading the letter to the editor written by Gert Feldman in the July 19 News Transcript. Mrs. Feldman is in the process of celebrating her 91st birthday, and I wish her well, but I cannot accept the scalding, libelous and untrue accusations she has cast upon one of the best friends Covered Bridge has had in many years.
As everyone in Covered Bridge knows, we have been trying to get the traffic light installed at Wild Turkey Way for many years. I was there when one Republican mayor turned to a Republican on the Township Committee who later became mayor himself, and said, "She will never see that light in her lifetime."
We are all aware of the long succession of Republican mayors who gave lip service to us and refused to get us the light, including the last Republican mayor that Mrs. Feldman praises in her letter, who flat out said that he wasn’t going to approve this light just because of 300 letters.
This light is being installed, as we all know, because the Dem-ocrats made it a campaign issue when Stu Moskovitz and Mary Cozzolino ran in 1998. This light is being installed because of the relentless, unyielding pursuit of this light by Stu Moskovitz, who refused to take no for an answer and made sure it not only happened, but happened as soon as he became mayor.
To suggest that he was against this light is absurd. In fact, I was at the bond meeting to which Mrs. Feldman refers. The Repub-lican majority insisted on a bond that would not have guaranteed any funds for the light. Stu Moskovitz announced he was voting against the bond issue and demanded a bond issue that would guarantee the money would be used for the light.
Because Mary Cozzolino agreed with him, the Republicans were forced to rewrite the bond issue to assure that the light would be built.
Mrs. Feldman’s statements that Stu Moskovitz said derogatory comments about Orthodox Jews is equally ridiculous. Any-one who knows Mayor Mosko-vitz well knows he has served one area synagogue as acting cantor and board member, serves another area synagogue as an active choir member and junior congregation instructor and often leads daily and Friday night services at that synagogue. He is a solid friend of Chabad and many other Jewish organizations in Manal-apan.
Mrs. Feldman could not have made a more preposterous allegation than to accuse him of such comments.
Mrs. Feldman, I wish you well on your 91st birthday, but that is not an excuse for misrepresenting the facts. As a member of the Trustees of the Covered Bridge Condominium Association, I applaud Mayor Moskovitz’s ef-forts to get us this light and we are all grateful that the light is now a reality.
