MONROE – Nicholas L. Altieri, 85, died July 19 at home.
Born in Long island, N.Y., he lived in Bayonne and Hightstown before moving to Monroe.
Mr. Altieri received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Newark College of Engineering, a master’s in administration and supervision from Seton Hall University and earned a professional engineering license.
In 1939 he taught in the Bayonne and Trenton school systems. He also taught engineering at Farleigh Dickinson and Seton Hall universities. In 1966, he was appointed vice principal of the vocational division of Trenton Central High School and served in that capacity until 1968, when he was appointed superintendent of Mercer County Vocational-Technical Schools.
He was named a member of the New Jersey Advisory Council of Vocational Education by Gov. Brendan Byrne, and served two years as secretary-treasurer of the Association of Boards of Education of County Vocational Schools of New Jersey. He retired as superintendent in 1978.
Following his retirement, Mr. Altieri was a consultant design engineer for Jos. DiAquino & Associates and specifications engineer for Johnson & Johnson dental products division and Schroeder Architects.
He owned Town House Motel/Coach & Four Restautant, from 1957 until its sale in 1983.
While living in Cranbury, he served two terms on the Cranbury Lions Club and named Lion of the Year in 1995-96. He was instrumental in the design and implementation of the Cranbury Township Web site.
He won an award from Microsoft for his computer work for the Space Coast Computer Users Group in Cocoa, Fla., and was also a member of the Satellite Beach computer club. As a founding member of the Rossmoor Computer Club, he developed and instructional program for computer beginners and also served on its educational committee.
Mr. Altieri was a life member of Epsilon Pi Tau and the National Society of Professional Engineers and was also a member of the Rossmoor Kiwanis Club.
Husband of the late Marie Mongiello Alitieri, he is survived by his wife, Janice Taylor McCarty Altieri of Monroe and Melbourne, Fla.; two daughters, Jean Marie Altieri of Monroe and Connie Singelakis of Jackson; a stepson, Robeert F. McCarty of Brick; two sisters, Lee Bevilacqua and Antoinette Petrosino of Laguana Beach, Calif.; and three grandchidlren, Nicole West, Jennifer Bencze Anderson and Peter Singelakis.
Funeral was held at A.S.Cole Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Cranbury, with Monsignor Haughney of Nativity of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church in Monroe officiating.
Entombment was in Holy Ctrossd Burial Park Mausoleum, South Brunswick.
