I have known Gert Feldman for quite a few years and found her to be interested in helping people. She has given many hours of her time trying to make the community of Covered Bridge a better place to live. She should be applauded and recognized for her work.
For example, in Covered Bridge where she resides, there were huge potholes and broken concrete in our parking area, from one end to the other.
This was very dangerous, to put it mildly. Every resident in this cul-de-sac kept contacting the trustees, trying to have the road repaired, but to no avail — until this little lady put her efforts forward and, with only one letter, convinced the powers that be that improvements were necessary.
One day after the trustees received her letter, measurements for the repairs were taken. Thank you, Gert — but you didn’t stop there.
Union Hill Road was desperately in need of a traffic light, and traffic was getting heavier,
Gert Feldman did something none of the others did to help us — she contacted Gov. Christie Whitman and made her aware of the hazardous conditions on Union Hill Road.
Doctors tried first, then shopkeepers, then others — they got nowhere. Gert Feldman showed it could be accomplished if presented to the Manalapan Township Committee, and lobbying and raising money for the traffic light.
Gert, who used her own money to prepare and present the application for the traffic light, has no intentions of having a ceremony for the ribbon cutting when the new traffic light is working. Her explanation: "I did what I set out to do — help all the taxpayers. I did that, and now I’m working on something else."
What Gert doesn’t tell you is that it took her four months to get her project in the 1999 budget; others have been trying for about 20 years and did not succeed.
We all refer to the new traffic light as "Gert’s light," and it sure is. We doff our hats to you and thank you, Gert.
