Sophomore Bob Brownlie, a member of the Rutgers University baseball team, was selected to participate in the prestigious Cape Cod League All-Star Game, set for last Saturday at Cape Cod Tech in Harwich, Mass.
Brownlie, who recently completed his freshman season at Rutgers, represented the Falmouth Commodores as a reserve pitcher in the game.
His selection marks the third-consecutive season that Rutgers has been represented in the Cape Cod League All-Star game, following Mike O’Brien (1998) and David DeJesus (1999).
The Big East Rookie of the Year and Freshman All-American honoree, Brownlie finished with a 10-1 record for Rutgers this season, posting a 2.55 ERA. In 104 innings, Brownlie allowed just 94 hits while setting a new single-season school mark with 89 strikeouts. He also tied the single-season marks for shutouts (4) and complete games (8). He won his last 10 decisions, including a 3-0 mark in the postseason. Brownlie was the winning pitcher in the Big East Championship game, hurling a complete-game, six-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Seton Hall and then picked up his final victory with a 4-3 win over Army in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
Since heading to Cape Cod, Brownlie is 3-2 with a 2.47 ERA. He is among the league leaders in earned run average and is second in the circuit with 48 strikeouts in just 43.2 innings. The Commodores are currently 15-15 on the season and in second place in the Western Division. He is also one of four Big East players selected to the game, joined by a trio of Notre Dame players – Steve Stanley, Paul O’Toole and Brian Stavisky.
In addition, Brownlie earned another laurel when he was selected to a Cape Cod All-Star Team that faced the U.S. National Team July 29 in Chatham, Mass.
Slated to start the contest on the mound for the Cape All-Stars, Brownlie was replaced by Princeton’s Chris Young due to scheduling conflicts with the regular season. Brownlie was scheduled to start a regular season contest later in the week.
The Cape Cod Baseball League selected its 22-player team by combining the "best of the best" from the July 22nd All-Star game. Brownlie, who pitched for the East All-Star squad, is among the league leaders in earned run average, innings and strikeouts, posting a 3-2 record with a 2.31 ERA entering the All-Star break this season.
The USA Baseball Team finalized its 22-man roster for the USA Baseball National team on June 22.
The team was selected from a pool of 35 players and consists of several collegiate All-Americans.
The team is coached by Southern California’s Mike Gillepsie and will play approximately 30 games on the U.S. West Red, White and Blue tour this summer.
