Softball squad shows well in tournaments

The South Brunswick Athletic Association girls 12-and-under fast pitch softball team improved its record to 11-11 with good showings in Monroe and Ewing tournaments.
The Vikings beat Montgomery 10-2. With the score 3-1 in the fourth, South Brunswick scored six runs on six hits and went on to the victory. Samantha Littlejohn had three hits and Alicia Langone, Danielle Blair and Jackie Raspa each had two hits. Courtney Breese was the winning pitcher.
Against Monroe, the game remained scoreless until the third inning when the Vikings scored 17 runs on their way to a 23-1 win. Langone and Littlejohn had three hits and scored three times. Raspa, Christie Piemonti and Jasmine Hemmings each had two hits. Jenny Beer scored three times and Jessica Mastronardi scored four runs. Breese again was the winning pitcher.
Behind 2-0 to Manalapan, the Vikings again rallied in the third inning and scored seven runs while sending 10 to the plate. Langone, Littlejohn and Raspa led the attack with two hits each to ensure the 13-6 victory. Danielle Blair was the winning pitcher.
But South Brunswick could not take advantage of their No. 2 seed Sunday, losing to Manalapan 9-6. Langone collected two more hits.
In the Ewing Tournament after losing their first two games the Vikings beat the No. 2 team, North Hunterton, 1-0, behind the pitching of Samantha Littlejohn. Courtney Breese scored on a wild pitch in the second for SB’s only run. Littlejohn struck out 10 and allowed only one hit.
Against Monroe the Vikings went on to a 10-7 victory. Behind 6-3, South Brunswick scored 5 in the fourth and 2 in the sixth to come away with the win. Amanda Ryan’s running, shoestring catch in center kept Monroe out of a rally in the sixth. Breese, Langone, Hemmings and Courtney Dwyer led the hitting attack. Blair was the winning pitcher.
The No. 1 seed, the Southern Hurricanes, proved too much for the Viking as they beat SB 10-2 in the quarter finals. Alicia Langone collected three more hits in the loss.
In probably their best defensive game of the year, the girls beat Middlesex 7-4 in Tri-County League action. Danielle Blair made two tremendous catches in center and doubled off a runner at first in the last inning, plus had three hits. Stephanie Zucker played a flawless second base. With the score 5-4 in the seventh, Amanda Ryan delivered a single to drive in two insurance runs. Ryan was the winning pitcher.
