The Colts Neck Racquet Club’s 3.0 Women’s Team will be competing for the Eastern Sectional championships in the USA League under the United States Tennis Association at Syracuse, N.Y., this week. The Colts Neck team qualified for the Eastern Sectional by winning the Southern Regional title over teams from mid-Hudson and Westchester, N.Y. If the women are successful in Syracuse, the next stop is the national championships in Tucson, Ariz. Oct. 19-22.
The USA League is open to men and women 19 years and older who want to play competitive matches. Teams consist of women or men whose rankings are based on the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP). The ratings are 1.0-2.5 for beginner; 3.0-4.0 for intermediate; and 4.5 and above for advanced.
The Colts Neck Racquet Club began its trip to the sectional by winning at the local level. The women went 7-0, competing in an eight-team tournament facing teams from Colts Neck, Little Silver and Shrewsbury. Colts Neck then went on to win the Area Championship at Ramapo College against teams from Bergen, Passaic and Morris County.
Ellen Morgenstern is the captain of the Colts Neck squad. Joining her on the team are: Cherie Pauley, Cindy Furmato, Laura Dellaccio, Mary Anne Liotta, Susan Seide, Cheryl Gardina, Karen Manger, Beth Berke, Bonnie Franzblau, Mindy Fellingham, Teri Kolakowski and Lisa Robles.
Richard Hwang recorded the low round of the day when the 2000 Junior Golf Competition Circuit of New Jersey made its stop at the Cranbury Golf Course on Aug. 3. Hwang won the 14-17-year-old division after shooting a 36. Matthew Spielman was second after carding a 38, and Steve Cho was third (39).
In the 11-13-year-old competition, Robert Gross won with a 46. Kyle Kurczeski and Jeremy Schilling were next with 51s. Kurczeski won the tie-breaker for second place on a match of cards.
Thomas Gerretti won the 9-10-year-old division after shooting a fine 39. Max Bichsel (43) and Zak Hasselbrink (49) were second and third.
Bobby Krueger won the 8-year-old division by one stroke over Bret Markowitz, 43-44. Matthew Molinari (51) was third.
The next stop on the Junior Golf Competition circuit is Monday in Old Bridge at the Glenwood Country Club. Tee time is noon. On Aug. 24, the golfers will travel to Woodlake Country Club, Lakewood, for a 1 p.m. tee-off.
The 2000 JGC Championship will be Aug. 31 at the Forsgate Country Club in Monroe.

The Battle of Monmouth Jaguars, a 1986-87 girls soccer team, is looking for one dedicated player to complete their roster for the 2000-01 season and beyond. The Long Branch Police Athletic League Boxing Club will be presenting an international boxing tournament on Sept. 1 at the Ocean Place Conference Center, Long Branch. The Battle of Monmouth II, the British Are Coming, will be a rematch between local amateur boxers against the Police Boxing Association of England. The Monmouth County Park System will sponsor the Timberbrook Triathlon at the Manasquan Reservoir, Windeler Road, Howell, on Oct. 14 starting at 8:30 a.m. The Timberbrook Triathlon consists of a 2-mile canoe/kayak, a 4-mile mountain bike ride and a 3-mile run. Individual, team and family awards will be presented. The registration fee, which includes a commemorative T-shirt, is $20 per individual and $35 per team/family. Field size is limited.
