Freehold Township’s Val Majewski took the New England Collegiate Baseball League by storm this summer playing with the Eastern Tides, based in Middletown, Conn. The Rutgers University sophomore was starting outfielder for the east squad in the all-star game, then went on to win Rookie of the Year honors, capture the Home Run Derby (with 10 dingers in the final round) and make the All-League First Team. The NECBL is one of just eight wooden-bat summer leagues sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and partially funded by Major League Baseball. Scouts representing most teams attend league games.

Majewski, the News Transcript’s 1999 Male Athlete of the Year while at Freehold Township High School where he was a soccer and baseball star, enjoyed a fine freshman season at Rutgers. He was a Big East All-Rookie selection after batting .286 with three home runs and 15 RBI. Rutgers won the Big East title and earned a trip to the NCAA tournament.

Howell High School has the following coaching vacancy for the fall season: boys’ assistant soccer coach. Interested candidates must have earned a minimum of 60 college credits. Anyone interested in the position should call Christine Dee, supervisor of extracurricular activities, at 919-2131.
