The 2000 Senior Condo Olympics concluded on Aug. 15 with the 12th annual awards ceremony held at Monroe High School in the Richard P. Marasco Performing Arts Center.

This year’s games again drew another large contingent of participants from the 10 senior condos in western Monmouth County and Monroe Township: Clearbrook, Concordia, Covered Bridge 1, Covered Bridge 2, Greenbriar at Marlboro, Greenbriar at Whittingham, Marlboro Greens, The Ponds, Rossmoor and Surrey Downs. The Senior Condo Olympics is the brainchild of Fran Dichter and Eddie Fleisher.

All of the medal-winning athletes received their medals at the awards ceremony.

In Basketball, Greenbriar at Marlboro and Concordia won the gold medals.

Jerry Solow captained the Greenbriar at Marlboro squad that won Division A. Larry Ehrlich, Artie Savins, Ben Forte, Jerry Collins and Dave Adges were the other members of the championship team.

Moe Ellish and Herb Gilsenberg were the co-captains of Division B-winning Concordia. Rounding out the squad were Red Rubenfeld, Mark Hoch and Sy Scharf.

Rossmoor won the gold medal in bocce in Division A, captained by Ann Avenoso. Joining her on the team were Cario Anzalone, Don Reese, Pat Mueller, Tony Avenoso, Joe Attar, Fred Marano, Ted Petix, Jack McCarthy, Millie Groves, Phil Sellitti and Marie Critelli.

Dom Lipariti captained the Division B bocce winners: Jim Volpe, Mario Velardi, Rita Terrano, Bob Nilsen, Sam Frost, Estelle Frost, Virginia Caruso, Joe Manfre and Antonietta Diana.

In bowling, Concordia and Greenbriar at Whittingham fielded the gold medal teams.

Stanley Blechman was the captain of Concordia’s Division A champions. Also on the team were Hy Nizewitz, Anita Nenery, Arthur Shapiro, Sandy Samberg, Jerry Lory, Adele Wain, Harold Barr, Bernard Finley, Herman Vinnet, Arnold Nobel and Barbra Price.

Nancy Greenly captained the Division B champions from Greenbriar at Whittingham. Rounding out the team were Mildred Colamussi, Jim Schilling, Bruno Chmiel, Dick Zultner, Kathy Mendelson, Joe Charwin, Jack Abramowitz, Bernie Teiger, Andy Oslinker, Lenny Semel and Stan Segall.

Rossmoor and The Ponds won the golf competition.

Ralph Wuest was the captain of the Rossmoor team that won Division A. Donald O’Malley, Ken Stiles, Joseph Conway, James Miller, Gerry Hall and Bill Thompson made up the gold medal linksmen.

The Division B winner, The Ponds team, was captained by John Grecco. Richard Brum, Michael Hochman, Saul Krakovsky, Herbert Unger, Harry Kaminsky, Irv Goldman, Morton Spiegel, Richard Parla and Michael Simon round out the team.

Ladies’ racewalking was won in Division A by Greenbriar at Marlboro. The gold medal winners were captained by Linda Ehrlich with Lorraine Zimmerman, Brenda Schofield and Roz Weitnzner the other members of the team.

Lorraine Schwartz captained the Division B gold medal winners in ladies’ racewalking from Rossmoor. The other fast walkers on the team were: Cody Eckert, Janet Geng and Anna Lessner.

Greenbriar at Whittingham fielded the fastest men’s racewalkers in Division A. Making up the squad were captain Jay Goldfine, Spencer Halper, Paul Klarman and Arnold Bornstein.

Clearbrook captured the Division B men’s racewalking gold. Their team consisted of captain Stan Berger, Roy Cook, Mitch Kolber and Abe Weinman.

In 9-ball pool, Clearbrook and Covered Bridge I had the sharpest shooters.

Clearbrook won Division A, captained by Ken Diamond. Hy Strahl, Irving Moses, Willie Schaeffer, Norman Katz, George Schwartz and Vinnie Salvato rounded out the team.

Covered Bridge I was made up of captain Nat Esaqui, Seymour Eisenberg, Irving Bixen, Arnie Sarett, Sam Feldstein and Larry Giannone.

In shuffleboard, Greenbriar at Marlboro (Division A) and Surrey Downs (Division B) were the golden winners.

Captain Frank Hausman, Stan Farbstein, Mel Sachs, Sid Alpert, Irwin Grossman, Charles Sprechman, Joe Graziano, John Muriello, Sy Cooper, Sol Weitzman, Marty Kaplan and Seymour Winter make up the winning team.

Making up the Surrey Downs team were captain Annette Ruggiero, Al Morreale, Morris Levy, Julia Liali, Jim Liali, Joe Demartino, Stanley Rubenstein, Phyllis Stanley, Neil Stanley, Dora Nierenberg and Frank Provenzano.

Straight pool gold went to Marlboro Greens (Division A) and Greenbriar at Marlboro (Division B).

Jim Volpe, captain, was joined on the Marlboro Greens team by Mario Velardi, Bud Fingerhut and Anthony Cangialosi.

Greenbriar at Marlboro had captain Joe Carollo, Irwin Rosenthal and Tony D’Esposito.

Concordia (Division A) and Greenbriar at Whittingham (Division B) captured the gold at table tennis.

Alex Black was the captain of the Concordia team. Joining him on the winning unit were: Ed Gutman, Jack Rozales, Arthur Blatt, Maz Pries, Bud Cohen, Sid Weinstein, Bob Coleman and Al Goldman.

Jay Goldfine captained the Greenbriar at Whittingham team which included Richard Roth, Seymour Lasker, Arthur Gitter, Bill Libfraind, Sheldon Weiss, Selma Brenner, David Rynecki and Irv Gelb.

In tennis, Greenbriar at Whittingham (Division A) and The Ponds (Division B) served up aces as they swept the men’s and women’s competitions.

Buddy Kosoff captained Greenbriar at Whittingham’s men’s team. Rounding out the team were Mort Connor, Dave Katzelnick, Frank Cippola, Don Shustak, Eugene Spitz, Richard Diamond, Marty Stern, Carl Lipschultz, Dick Brief, Harvey Lazar, Frank Zawel and Howard Shore.

Greenbriar’s women’s team consisted of captain Sandy Tuckman, Sue Stern, Delores Schmidt, Roz Katzelnick, Diane Altman and Phyliss Conner.

John Zink captained The Ponds’ men’s tennis team which were S.B. Li, John Gaw, Marty Eisen, Stanley Godt, Earl Feder, Stan Seltzer, Gerald Downey, Dave Green, Harry Kaminsky and Erwin Schwartz.

The Ponds’ gold medal-winning women’s tennis team had a roster of captain Judith Beck, Janet Seltzer, Dolores Davidson and Anita Monyek.
