MAIN STREET CORNER
This year’s Main Street Scramble is really taking off. The fourth annual scramble, to be held at The Lawrenceville School’s golf course Sept. 15, is a sure bet to be the most successful yet, with higher levels of corporate and individual sponsorships and the potential to raise more money for Lawrenceville Main Street and its programs than any of the three previous scrambles.
This year, RCN Corp. has signed up as the event sponsor. RCN is the nation’s first and largest single-source, facilities-based provider of bundled communications services to the residential market and the nation’s largest targeted Internet service provider, with all of its customers strategically clustered in the Boston to Washington and San Francisco to San Diego corridors as well as the Chicago area. The company is currently providing local and long-distance telephone, cable television, and its rcn.com Internet services to the most densely populated telecommunications markets in the country, from Boston to Washington, San Francisco to San Diego, and Chicago.
RCN’s True Local Network is a unique broadband fiber-optic platform capable of offering a full suite of communications services – including fully featured voice, video, and high-speed Internet – to residential customers. The network employs SONET ring backbone architecture and localized nodes built to ensure that RCN’s state-of-the-art fiber optics travel to within 900 feet of its customers, with fewer electronics and lower maintenance costs than existing local networks. RCN’s East and West Coast local fiber optic networks target densely populated areas comprising nearly 44 percent of the U.S. residential communications market spread over just 6 percent of its geography.
RCN’s involvement with Lawrenceville is about to increase dramatically. Lawrence Township’s Planning Board recently approved RCN’s application to build a new corporate headquarters on Princeton Pike at the site of the old Union Camp building. The new campus will eventually consist of 10 buildings. With such a major commitment to our community, RCN has also made it clear that it plans to be fully involved as a positive force in our community.
In announcing its sponsorship of the Main Street Scramble, RCN spokesperson Keri Colleary said, "RCN is happy to be associated with Lawrenceville Main Street, whose dedication to the community and the revitalization of downtown Lawrenceville is to be commended. RCN’s sponsorship of the Lawrenceville Main Street Scramble and picnic gives us the chance to develop closer ties with the community and create awareness for the RCN brand."
Lawrenceville Main Street welcomed RCN’s sponsorship of the scramble.
"RCN is just coming into our community, and we are happy to have them on board as the event sponsor of this year’s scramble," said Lee Garwig, co-chair of the scramble committee. "We are gratified that a company that has cast its future so closely with Lawrence Township has also recognized Lawrenceville Main Street and its community redevelopment efforts."
Anyone interested in participating in the Main Street Scramble, the tennis clinic, or the community picnic – all of which will take place on Friday, Sept. 15 – should contact Mr. Garwig at 219-9300.
