MONROE — Plans by the Toll Brothers development company could reduce the number of open-pit mines in Monroe Township to one.
Representatives of the Huntington, Pa., company told the township last week they are seeking to buy the Buck Brothers sand and gravel quarry site on Spotswood-Englishtown Road for the construction of an adult-community.
If the Toll Brothers’ purchase plans go through, the Stavola Contracting Co., across from the Costco Wholesale warehouse, on Possum Hollow Road, could hold the last mining permit in Monroe, Township Engineer Ernie Feist said Thursday.
This is not the first Monroe Township mine to be the site of residential development.
“Toll Brothers’ Regency at Monroe development is being built on land that used to be part of the Etsch and Toto mining operations,” Mr. Feist said.
The Regency site is bordered by Buckelew Avenue and Spotswood-Englishtown Road.
The engineer said he, Mayor Richard Pucci and other municipal officials, who met with the Toll Brothers representatives, were pleased with the meeting.
“Our reaction was positive. The adult-community construction planned by Toll Brothers gives us an excellent ratable base, and we received their commitment for road improvements,” Mr. Feist said.
The 184 acres from the Buck Brothers mining site would give Toll Brothers 459 acres in the township for planned retirement community development.
The company said it plans to build 1,613 adult-community homes at its Regency at Monroe development off Buckelew Avenue and at the Buck Brothers property during the next decade, Mr. Feist said.
He also said Toll Brothers would foot the bill for road improvements near the development. In addition, they will build a water tower and extend waste-water sewer lines into the southern part of Monroe.
