Carl Hammond, who helped lead Howell High School to the Shore Conference A North Division title last fall, is now playing for the men’s soccer team at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft. Brookdale, which is coached by Scott Ridley, was 11-7-1 last fall. The Jersey Blues play five straight road games before coming home to play Gloucester on Sept. 20 at 3:30 p.m.

The Samaritan Center, Englishtown, will host its 10th annual Jim Flanagan Golf Outing on Monday at the Cranbury Golf Club, Southfield Road (off Route 571). The event will consist of a barbecue luncheon, 18 holes of golf which features a four-player scramble format, golf cart, pay-as-you-go bar and a full-course buffet. There will be a selection of golf and door prizes. Cost is $125 per person. The New Jersey Sire Stakes program started its new Green Acres Racing Series at Freehold Raceway with two $10,700 non-betting races for 2-year-old colts and gelding pacers.

The first Green Acres race went to Giant Drive with Cat Manzi in the bike. Manzi drove the son of Matt’s Scooter to a 2:01 mile. Keystone Style, the No Nukes colt, won the second race with David Miller driving in 1:59.1.

The NJSS Green Acres Racing Series replaces the Sire Stakes fair racing program that was held primarily at farms across the state as a non-pari-mutuel component of the overall Sire Stakes program. The Green Acres Series will be instituted at state racetracks and when possible, pari-mutuel wagering will be offered on the races.

The series features three preliminary legs and a guaranteed $25,000 final in each 2- and 3-year-old divisions.

Lizzytish, a yearling filly sired by the pacing stallion Falcon’s Future, was the grand champion of the 38th annual Standardbred Horse Show sponsored by the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey and held at the New Jersey Horse Park in Upper Freehold Township.

In addition to winning the $1,500 as grand champion, Lizzytish picked up an additional $600 for winning the yearling filly division preliminary judging.
