Mauser wins regular season Triple Crown at Wall Stadium
FFarmingdale native Tom Mauser completed the regular season Triple Crown at Wall Stadium on Saturday night when he took the checkered flag in the 70-lap Coors Light Classic.
Mauser had won the Marion O’Rorke Memorial Independence ’76 and Garden State Classic extra distance races this year before capturing the rain-postponed Coors Light Classic.
Starting ninth in the field, Mauser moved up to second place on lap 25. On lap 31, he motored by Brick’s Ronnie Mullen into the lead and held it from there. With the win, Mauser grabbed the points lead in the Modified Division.
Dan MacLaughliln Jr. of Toms River was second at the finish line followed by Tim Arre of Toms River, Mullen and Harry Reed of Freehold.
The regularly scheduled 30-lap Modified feature was won by Brick’s Mike Carpenter followed by Dave Michel of Manahawkin, Charlie Kremer Jr. of Toms River and Mauser.
Rob Williams of Farmingdale avoided an early accident and raced to his fifth win of the season in the Pro Stock 25-lap feature. Another Farmingdale driver, Jim Vogt, was second. Points leader Ray Gastelu of Jackson was third, followed by Chas Okerson of Freehold and Kenny Reaves of Piscataway.
Port Monmouth’s Anthony Crimaldi picked up his second win of the season in the 20-lap Street Stock main event. He battled hard with Mark Bartlett before taking the lead late in the race.
Glenn Higgins of Englishtown was the class of the field in the Truck Series 20-lap feature. Season-long points leader Chris Kilbride of Colts Neck was sixth.
Russ Bailey won the open cockpit Three-Quarter Midget race, the George Verhoest Memorial.
All five stock car divisions will be in action on Saturday night starting at 7.
New Egypt Speedway
Howell’s Mike Reutter Jr., a rookie, scored his first career win at New Egypt Speedway, leading all but one lap of the Sportsman feature. The caution-riddled race was concluded after lap 13 because it had reached its time limit. J.C. Mears was second.
Phillipsburg’s Gary Butler won the 30-lap Modified feature, his second of the season.
He went by Mike Hendershot on the seventh lap and assumed control from there. Kenny Brightbill charged through the field to challenge him, but a blown right rear tire knocked him out of contention and made life at the front easier for Butler.
Ricky Giannino of Bayshore, L.I., had the fans on their feet nipping Pat Freiberger by less than two-thousandths of a second. It was as good as a mile for Giannino, who notched his first-ever win at NES in the 15-lap Street Stock final.
Winners of the Lightning Lap Awards were: Brightbill (15.299), Reutter (16.229) and Bill Bauer (Street Stock, 17.525).
All three divisions will continue the 2000 season on Saturday, starting at 6:30
