JERRY WOLKOWITZ A South River resident makes sure to feed the meter after the borough raised fines for unpaid parking.
SOUTH RIVER — The next time you park your car in front of a meter, add an extra quarter just to be safe.
Overtime parking fees will soon more than double.
The Borough Council recently agreed to increase overtime parking ticket fees by $7.50. A ticket will now cost $14.50 instead of the former fee of $7.
The increase was suggested by Municipal Court Judge James Hyland because the borough was not making enough revenue, borough officials said. The state charges $4.50 per ticket that the borough issues, officials said.
With such a high surcharge, the borough was not generating enough revenue from the $7 charge.
Voting in favor of the ordinance were councilmen Tele Koukourdelis, Salvatore Marsicano and David Sliker. Voting against the ordinance was Councilman Shawn Haussermann. Councilmen Tony Ciulla and Jim Jones were not present at the meeting.
The new rate is the first time overtime parking ticket fees increased in 10 years, officials said.
