LAMBERTVILLE – Lambertville Ramblers football returned to its newly renovated home turf Sunday at Ely Memorial Field when it hosted the Washington Borough Redskins of Warren County.
The Ramblers played at South Hunterdon Regional High School last year because their field was closed due to a drainage project in the city. The Ramblers’ next home game is Sept. 30 when they host Oxford.
The midget team tied with the Redskins, 6-6, in an action-packed game that ended in double overtime.
Ramblers running back Jesse Fennimore opened with a touchdown on the first possession but the Ramblers failed on an extra-point attempt.
In the second quarter, Fennimore broke lose again with a 90-yard touchdown run that was called back on a penalty.
The Redskins didn’t come alive until late into the third quarter when they tied the game but failed on an extra-point attempt.
Both teams battled hard through the fourth quarter but neither the Ramblers or Redskins managed to score, forcing the tie game into overtime.
The Ramblers won the coin toss. They got to the five-yard line in two running plays but lost possession after the ball was fumbled on the third down.
The Redskins took possession of the ball on the 10-yard line and got within two and one-half yards of the goal line on two running plays. They missed a pitch on the third down and were brought back to the 14-yard line. They failed to score in the fourth down when a pass play faltered.
The Ramblers took possession of the ball and got within three yards of the goal line in their second attempt at scoring in overtime. They emerged from a time-out at the end of the third down with a decision to kick a field goal. But the kick was 2 feet too wide to the left, and the Ramblers lost their final opportunity to score in overtime.
The Redkins took over at the 10-yard line. After four plays, they stalled on the five-yard line, ending the game in a tie.
The Ramblers’ biddy team lost, 26-7. The biddies scored on the first possession with a 30-yard pass play from Garret Williamson to Carl Snell. The extra point was scored by Williamson on a keeper.
The Redskins took advantage of a blocked punt and an outside kick to take the lead in the second quarter. The Ramblers threatened with a drive late in the game, but the clock ran out with the Ramblers on the Redskins’ 10-yard line.
The flag team also lost, 35-14, with Cody Stintsman scoring both touchdowns for the Ramblers.
