Marlboro’s Joe Pellegrino is running for the Rutgers University men’s cross-country team. In the Scarlet Knights’ first meet of the season, the Bucknell Invitational, Pellegrino, a sophomore, ran the 5-mile course in 26:15.29 to finish 13th overall and fifth among the Scarlet Knights’ harriers.

Rutgers defeated Manhattan 22-34 and Syracuse 15-42. Their only loss was to host Bucknell, 17-39. Next up for Rutgers is the George Washington Invitational on Sept. 30. Rutgers is pointed toward the Metropolitan Champions (Oct. 13) and the Big East Championships (Oct. 27).

Pellegrino is a Marlboro High School graduate. He was a Freehold District champion in cross country and in indoor and outdoor track for the Mustangs.

Brothers Tom and Dave Quinn of Manalapan are teammates on the Kean University, Union, football team. Dave Quinn, 19, was a wide receiver for the Cougars last fall. Tom, 21, who worked for a couple of years after graduating from Manalapan, decided to return to school this year and to join his brother Dave on the Cougars team. Tom Quinn is a tight end.

"I really wanted him to come to Kean," said Dave. "I knew he wanted to play football and I told him this a good place to do it."

Tom Quinn likes the honesty and self-assurance that exists between him and his brother.

"It’s good to get honest opinions about yourself," he noted. "We look out for each other and notice how the other is doing."

Howell’s Carl Hammond scored the first goal of the match in Brookdale Community College’s 2-1 win over Gloucester in a Garden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer game played in Lincroft. Hammond is a freshman defender. The Brookdale men are now 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the GSAC.

Vita Rizzo, a sophomore from Freehold Township, and Lauren Nangano, a freshman from Marlboro, scored for Brookdale’s women in their 2-0 win over Gloucester. Rizzo scored in the first half and then assisted on Nangano’s insurance goal in the second half. The Brookdale women are 4-2 overall, but 4-0 in the GSAC.

WPDQ 89.7 FM of Howell has signed an agreement with the Lakewood Blueclaws Baseball Club to broadcast all 140 games of the Blueclaws inaugural season in 2001 and any potential playoff games. The Blueclaws will play their home games in the brand new 6,588-seat stadium in Lakewood beginning in April. The Blueclaws are a member of the 16-team South Atlantic League, consisting of teams from New Jersey to Georgia.

"We are very excited to have forged a partnership with the Blueclaws and be a part of the groundbreaking minor league baseball experience in the area," said Jamie Christian, sports director for WPDQ. "By being the flagship station for the Blueclaws, it’s a win-win situation for both parties. Q89.7 can be a great conduit to the community for the team, and having the Blueclaws enhances our programming lineup."

"We are very excited that WPDQ stepped to the plate to broadcast our games," said Geoff Brown, the Blueclaws general manager. "They have an excellent coverage area that will reach all Blueclaws’ fans in Monmouth and Ocean counties. In addition, the sound quality that the FM side of the dial provides will allow our fans to listen to the game whether at the ballpark or in their back yard with the same clarity."

Each broadcast will consist of a 15-minute pre-game show and a 10-minute post-game show, in addition to the game.

The Jersey Shore Wildcats, a first-year AAU basketball team made up of area players, won the Summer League Basketball program at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, with a 9-1 record. The team entered the program as Vanessa’s Wildcats. The Wildcats are: Jackie Bringham, Sara Grimsgoard, Marissa Parto, Ashley Pfatt, Michele Whalen, Kate Gooch, Colleen Kilmuray, Sarah Fetter and Dana Tyndall. Pat Whalen is the head coach and his assistants were Vanessa Putnoky and Al Parto.

The Freehold Township Tornado Softball Organization is looking for players for its 12 and Under team. The following positions need to be filled: pitcher, catcher and two additional players. To arrange for a tryout or more information, call Andy at (732) 786-0681.

The Freehold Flash, a girls’ U-14 team, defeated the Neptune Nightmare, 2-1, in a Monmouth-Ocean Soccer Association match.

Trailing 1-0, Cristina Arcoleo tied the game for the Flash before halftime.

Arcoleo and Michelle Trebotica teamed for the game-winning goal in the second half. Neptune had a chance to tie the game, but goalie Sam Areman came up huge, blocking a penalty kick that preserved the MOSA Premier Division win.

Nicole Packo, Paige Areman, Kaitlyn Norton, Sam Basil, Shannon Ekdahl, Colleen Rackett, Megan Wilgucki, Danielle Allain, Sarah Monteiro, Jessica Androski, Gina Hernandez, Shannon Lallier, Katelyn Mazrekien and Arielle Galmidi round out the Flash.

Members of the United States Court Tennis Association will play an exhibition match at Georgian Court College, Lakewood, on Oct. 7 as part of the Gilded Age Gala at the college. During the cocktail hour, 6-7:30 p.m. gala attendees may view the playing of the sport popularized by King Henry VIII of England. Georgian Court College is the only college in the United States with a court tennis court. It was the one-time home of U.S. and Olympic court tennis champion Jay Gould, son of the Georgian Court estate builder George Jay Gould.

The Jay Gould Court Tennis Tournament, a private match hosted by the U.S. Court Tennis Association, will be played on Oct. 8 at the college.
