Township Chief Mike Chipowsky will be behind bars Monday
Mercer County Sheriff Samuel Plumeri Jr. is asking local residents, professionals and business people from the Mercer County area to volunteer their time and act as "jail birds" for the March of Dimes.
To raise funds for programs to prevent birth defects and infant mortality, Sheriff Plumeri returns as honorary chairman for his 10th year to take part in the annual March of Dimes Jail and Bail, which will run from Oct. 2 to 4 at Quaker Bridge Mall.
Among those who already have volunteered to go behind bars for the cause is Hopewell Township Police Chief Michael Chipowsky. He will appear at 10 a.m. on Oct. 2.
Serving as co-chairman for the fourth year are Joseph Mutinsky, president of Centex Homes in East Windsor, and Frank Petrino, Esq. of Sterns & Weinroth in Trenton. Mr. Mutinsky and Mr. Petrino will be cracking down on birth defects by arresting and jailing well known personalities and ordinary citizens for such outlandish "crimes" as "impersonating a hardworking employee," "flagrantly enjoying your job," or "setting the office clock ahead one hour."
"We are calling on area resident, business people, professionals and public officials to join us in jail to help the March of Dimes continue it’s mission of saving babies lives," stated Mr. Mutinsky. "Every year we have a great time at this event, while raising funds for a very special cause," added Mr. Petrino.
A mock jail will be erected for the "criminals" on Oct. 2 to 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lord & Taylor Center Court in Quaker Bridge Mall. At the jail, volunteer judges will set one-hour sentences for each law breaker. The jailbird uses that time to call friends, associates and co-workers to raise bail in the form of contributions to the March of Dimes.
Participation in the Jail and Bail requires as little as one hour of time and jailbirds can set their own bail amount. Anyone who would like to be arrested, or who would like to request the jailing of a spouse, friend, co-worker or other person, should call March of Dimes Central Jersey at 655-7400.
