Truck strikes school bus;
no serious injuries reported

OLD BRIDGE — A dump truck traveling down Route 9 south hit a bus carrying 39 students at the Intersection of Route 9 and Ferry Road. None of the students was seriously injured.

The driver of a dump truck owned by Jem Trucking Corp., Elizabeth, was traveling in the center lane of Route 9 south on Sept. 29 at 7:10 a.m. After the traffic light at the Ferry Road intersection turned red, the driver attempted to stop the truck, according to Old Bridge police reports. The truck allegedly slid on wet pavement, sliding through the intersection and striking a school bus carrying 39 students on its way to Old Bridge High School East.

The bus, owned by Hi-Lo Bus Services, Old Bridge, was traveling east on Ferry Road and was attempting to make a left turn onto Route 9 north when it was struck on the driver’s side of the vehicle by the dump truck, according to police.

Numerous students complained of pain at the scene of the accident, but refused medical treatment, according to police.

Five students were taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division, by Rural/Metro First Aid for further treatment.

"According to the information we received, none of the students were seriously injured," said R. Gregory Quirk, assistant superintendent for business for the Old Bridge school district.

The bus company has a contract with the Old Bridge Board of Education, according to Quirk.

Hi-Lo Bus Services did not wish to comment on the accident, stating that the matter is being handled by its insurance company.
