So. River may
limit number
of pets in homes
SOUTH RIVER — Residents may soon have to limit the number of pets they keep in their homes.
The borough Board of Health has proposed that residents who own cats and dogs only be allowed a total of three of either per household.
Under the measure, anyone with more than three cats or three dogs, or a combination of both in their homes, can be fined and the animals can be confiscated.
Currently there is no limit on the number of cats or dogs allowed in a household in the borough.
If approved, South River will not be the first to implement such a measure.
Nearby Sayreville recently approved a similar measure allowing for five pets of any type per household.
Officials say the measures are being taken because of an increase in residents’ complaints about such animals.
