SHREWSBURY — While plans for a new municipal building are moving from the drawing board to reality, some much needed work to the existing municipal building also will soon begin.
The borough is soliciting bids for repair work on the exterior of the Wardell House that will include reroofing, work on the wood siding and trim, and work on the gutters and leaders as well as painting the structure.
A decision on hiring a contractor for the work could be made at the Borough Council’s next meeting on Nov. 16.
Brian Valentino, the borough’s business manager, said the project will be paid for with a $100,000 special legislative grant the borough received from state.
No work is currently planned for the interior of the building, according to Valentino, and a start date has not been set.
The borough could accept a bid for the work on the project as early as the Nov. 16 Borough Council meeting.
Valentino said that if all of the bids exceeded the amount available through the grant it is likely the project would be scaled back so the grant would cover the entire cost of the work done.
While the weather may play a role in the decision, Valentino said he would like the work to begin as soon as possible.
This will be the first significant repair undertaken on the building in many years, according to the administrator.
When the new municipal building is completed the Wardell House will be vacated, but the borough has not yet made a determination on what its future use will be.
