A recent letter to the editor from Joseph Speranza (Independent, Oct. 25) grossly misstates my positions and distorts the facts. This is where I stand:
I am committed to saving Holmdel tax dollars by stopping overdevelopment. I have worked to secure significant grants for preserving open space, which is the key to maintaining our quality of life and stabilizing our rising taxes.
Mr. Speranza alleges that I failed to work with landowners whose properties were eligible for preservation. I co-authored the Open Space Study. It simply lists properties which might be of recreational or conservation value to the people of Holmdel. It gives landowners options for financial compensation for preservation instead of selling for development. As I have explained at numerous public presentations and in discussions with many landowners, this is a voluntary program.
As for the claim that I am a "one issue" candidate, I have been involved in many areas of concern to Holmdel citizens, including GPU power lines, library expansion, traffic and public safety, and recreation.
