Garden Club RFD, Middletown, will host "Christmas From the Pages of Literature," Nov. 14, 11:30 a.m. The presentation will be at Colts Neck Reformed Church, 72 Route 537 west. Tickets are $15 and may be obtained at the door. Price includes a luncheon.

Lecturer Loren Young Johnson will demonstrate how to create designs with flowers that capture the feeling of Christmas. She is a landscape designer and past chairwoman of the American Land Trust.

‘Hoop Shoot’ contest scheduled for Nov. 19

Middletown Elks Lodge No. 2179 will hold its annual "Hoop Shoot" contest, Nov. 19, 8 a.m. The event will be at Croydon Hall, Leonardville Road, Middletown, and is open to all boys and girls, age 8 to 13. Proof of age is required.

The contest is arranged in two divisions: boys ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13; and girls ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Contestants shoot for the best of 25 baskets, and first-place winners receive certificates and trophies.

Walk-a-thon to benefit Middletown teams

Hockey in Middletown Inc. will sponsor a walk-a-thon Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. The fund-raiser will benefit Middletown High School North and South hockey teams, and will commence at Middletown High School South.

A 4:15 p.m. hockey game will follow at the Red Bank Armory Ice Complex, Chestnut Street, Red Bank. A reception after the hockey game will feature a silent auction of sports memorabilia.

Poricy Park Nature Center, Oak Hill Road, Middletown, announced its November schedule as follows:

• Adult "Nature Walk," Nov. 3, 10:30-11:30 a.m.;

• Spring bulb planting workshop presented by Navesink Garden Club ex-President Bea Gardella, Nov. 5, 1:30-3 p.m.;

• "Colonial Apple Day," (grades 3-6), Nov. 9, 9 a.m. to noon, $18 members, $22 nonmembers, maximum of 15 participants, meet at Murray Farmhouse;

• "Hands-on Dulcimer Program," Nov. 12, 1:30-3:30 p.m.;

• "Fruits of the Harvest," (grades 1-5), Nov. 14, 4-5:30 p.m., $10 members, $12 nonmembers, maximum of 12 participants;

• Holiday "Greeting Card Workshop," Nov. 19, 1:30-3 p.m., $3 per participant;

• Post-Thanksgiving guided hike, Nov. 24, 10:30-11:30 a.m.; and

• "Revolutions in Kitchens," Nov. 26, 1-3:30 p.m., meet at Murray Farmhouse.

Park system plans hike, science center trip

The Monmouth County Park System offers a "Hacklebarney Breakfast Hike" Nov. 9 at 8 a.m. Tickets are $22 per person. The trip begins with breakfast at the Chester Diner followed by the 3-4 mile hike. Hacklebarney park runs adjacent to a gorge on the Black River and is in Chester, Morris County. Hiking boots are recommended; the hike covers rocky terrain and short, steep inclines.

The park system has scheduled a trip to the Liberty Science Center, Jersey City, for Nov. 12, 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. (approximate). Cost of the trip is $17 per person. The center features hands-on exhibits, an IMAX theater and a 3-D laser show.

Buses for both trips depart from Thompson Park, Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, and preregistration is required.

Church sets Charismatic

Healing Mass for Nov. 3

The Mother of God Community will be having a Charismatic Healing Mass on Nov. 3. Praise and worship begin at 7:30 p.m., followed by Mass at 8 p.m., which will be celebrated by the Rev. Jeff Kegley. Healing prayers will follow. This service will take place in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Leonardville Road in the New Monmouth section of Middletown. All are welcome. St. Mary’s Travel Group to discuss European tour

St. Mary’s Travel Group has booked a tour of central and Eastern Europe for October. There will be a meeting with a slide presentation, conducted by a Collette tour representative, on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the lower meeting room of St. Mary’s Church on Leonardville Road, New Monmouth section of Middletown.
