Annual event Nov. 4

The Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS) – in cooperation with Hopewell Township and Hopewell Borough – will sponsor the 19th annual cleanup day in Hopewell Valley on Saturday, Nov. 4.
Participants can earn money for their favorite nonprofit organization, earn a T-shirt for hard work, and enjoy doughnuts, coffee and soda, courtesy of Pennington Quality Market and Karen’s at Brookside.
Hopewell Township and Hopewell Borough have received grants totaling $32,000 that will be used to help make the Valley cleaner. The cleanup is one of the projects funded by this grant money.
The FoHVOS plans to organize as many different groups and individuals as possible to take responsibility for different sections of road. The group recommends that at least two people volunteer for road sections, because recyclables and other trash are collected in separate bags.
FoHVOS members expect the project to take no more than two to three hours.
Individuals and groups interested in participating should call Ted Stiles at 466-3763 to get road assignments. Or come to Hopewell Township Municipal Building, starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, where assignments also will be made.
Payment and T-shirts will be offered for a minimum of two hours of participation. The equivalent of $8 per adult-hour worked will be donated to the nonprofit organization of volunteer’s choice (as long as funds hold out).
This year children 12 or younger will earn $6 per hour toward the nonprofit organization of their choice. Adult supervision – one adult per four children under 12 years old – will be required.
Participants should be able to provide transportation to and from work areas, and be prepared to bring trash bags back to the municipal building, Route 546 and Scotch Road.
All participants must wear orange vests (they will be provided) and those who have cell phones are asked to bring them along. Those without cell phones should try to borrow them.
