The Matawan Huskies under-13 boys soccer team defeated the New Providence Jaguars by a score of 5-3. Following a nice drive down right field, Jon Foster’s goal attempt bounced off the Jaguar goalie but was slammed in by Rob Libraty for the first goal of the game. This was quickly followed by another goal by Libraty, a goal from the 18-yard line by Josh Mooney, and two goals by Ken Pesile. Colin Cecere and Steve Martinez had a couple of goal-scoring opportunities denied. The midfielders, Scott Fegler, Adam Garcia, Pat Kelley, Matt Shalhoub, and Brian Worth created several scoring opportunities. Despite a talented set of Jaguar forwards the Huskies’ defense, Dan Conti, Rob Gartner, Tom Howley, and Ted Okosi attacked with speed and precision. Goalie Dave Goodman kept it to a shutout for the first half.

The Aberdeen-Matawan Herricanes, an under-9 girls soccer team, beat the North Hunterdon Angels 5-1 Sunday. While neither team scored in the first half, the Herricanes came out in the second half and scored four goals before the Angels netted their first and only goal of the game. Besse Dimitropoulos scored two goals, and Gabrielle Saparoto, Robin Anderson and Caitlyn Hackman each scored a goal for the Herricanes. The Herricanes’ other forwards, Geena Basso, Megan Collante, Gabrielle Moore and Jessie Drapkin, also had good scoring opportunities and played well. Once again, great defensive play by Caitlyn Gatto, Katie Gerrity and Dimitropoulos kept the Angels at bay, while Amy Zahray made several great saves in goal.
