The Holmdel Hornets Pop Warner Jr. PeeWees football team finished their season 9-0. Their defense did not allow a single point to be scored on them all year, despite the fact that 11 of the team’s 24 players had never played football before this season. The team’s coaching staff stresses that the team does not have any star players, and excels because of its outstanding teamwork and work ethic. The Hornets are: Kenny LaPlante, Ryan Haslett, Matt Buckley, John Blakeslee, Will McGurk, James Sabatelli, Joseph DeGiulio, Brian Keenan, Philip Kealy, Jon Ryan Cirri, Connor Nelson, Luke Schetelich, Mike Yetka, Robert Silverman, Brian Amabile, Ricky Mosera, George Galasso, Dean Misiura, Chris Acquaviva, Michael Calandra, Ryan Garber, Nick Gorski, Chris Monfasani, Anthony Balzofiore, Joseph Miceli, Matt DiMaso and Michael Buonomo. The team is coached by Joe Sabatelli, John Cirri, Ken McGurk, Craig Nelson, Chet Gorski and Tony Balzofiore.

The Hazlet Wave under-13 boys soccer team played Holmdel at home and came away with a tightly fought tie last weekend. The Wave was down for most of the game, and in the last five minutes, Scott Latham scored both goals on passes from Sean Lennon and Matt Richards. The Wave’s midfield players and forwards, Tommy Devlin, Beau Dummer, Tommy Friscia, Greg Godzwon, Tom Grobelny, Brendan Hilliard, Robby Hollywood and Angel Martinez, had opportunities to score but were thwarted by the defense. The defensive players, Josh Barbarich and Mike Sullivan, made some great moves on the opposing players that kept them off balance and away from the goal for the last few minutes of the game. The Wave also had great saves by goalie Jeff King. Hazlet is coached by Gene Lennon & Randy Richards.
