The Kendall Park Skating and Hockey Facility is now accepting registrations for the upcoming youth leagues set to begin this week. Players ages 5-8 play Wednesdays in the learn-to-play division. Classes are available at 5:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., but space is limited. Players ages 13-17 also play on Wednesday evenings. Saturday mornings are for players 8-14. The facility is also accepting registrations for the gentlemen’s and ladies’ over-30 roller hockey league, set to restart on Dec. 4. All games are played on Monday evenings.
The following are the results of the South Brunswick women’s fall volleyball league. The A Division was won by Rider Furniture (23-4); followed by Pierre’s Deli (18-9), who won the playoff championship; Bunker Hill (17-10); North Brunswick Pub (16-11); Loyal Traitors (16-11); Master Tax (14-13); Glendale Liquors (11-16); RBH Powerwashing (10-17); Plaza Travel (7-20); and Keyboard Kids (3-24).
The B Division was won by CSB Service (22-5); Voight Farms (20-7); Weichert, Realtors (18-9); Groundmasters (18-90), who won the playoff championship; Pierre’s Deli (12-15); Bertucci Construction (11-16); Constable School (11-16); Pleasant Hill Farm (10-17); Port Lumber (7-20); and GWS (6-21).
Registration is being accepted for the Old Bridge ice hockey youth instructional program at the Old Bridge Sports Arena. The 11-week winter program, held on Sunday evenings beginning Dec. 10, will teach youngsters ages 5 through 12 the fundamentals of hockey, including stick handling, passing and shooting. Participants are required to wear full equipment. The 90-minute sessions are broken into two age groups: 5-8 and 9-13. The cost is $175 for Old Bridge residents and $200 for non-residents. The East Brunswick Recreational Wrestling Club is accepting registrations for the 2000-2001 season. The program is open to children in grades 2-8 and is designed to teach the fundamentals of scholastic wrestling. There are teams available for both experienced and inexperienced wrestlers. Practices are held at Churchill Junior High School, while matches and tournaments are held throughout Middlesex County. The season begins the week of Nov. 20 and ends in March. The club is also looking to supplement its existing coaching staff, and is seeking coaches with previous wrestling and/or wrestling coaching experience. The Monroe Township Recreation Department is now accepting teams and individual names to form a men’s over-30 winter basketbal league. The Central Jersey Riptide, a youth and adult soccer league, is looking for players for a new league, which will play its games on weekends in January and February at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. Lindsey Pritzlaff had two goals as the Monroe Panthers, an under-14 girls travel soccer team, edged the North Brunswick Wildcats 2-1. Jackie Grszka and Jessica Barszcz each picked up an assist. Cassandra Carr, Katie Minenna and Sara Feldhan had strong defensive games, while Heidi Potochar, Debbie Stelmaszczyk, Tina Maccaro and Gryszka controlled the mid-field. Gryszka and Faith Sacklow combined in goal to shut down the Wildcats attack.
Several local runners finished in the top 20 of the Oct. 29 Frost on the Pumpkin 10K road race in South River. Leading the list was David DeMonico, 32, of South River (32:37), followed by Parlin’s Jeremy Stratton, 40, (36:33) in second, Brian O’Dowd, 40, (37:39) in fourth, Jaffrey Suydam, 40, of East Brunswick (38:03) in fifth, Ken Vercammen, 41, of North Brunswick (38:33) in seventh, Scott Lichtenberger, 16, of Old Bridge (39:58) in 12th, Annie O’Dowd, 38, of Old Bridge, (40:17), Janice Rein, 39, of South River (42:24) in 19th, and David Rein, 40, of South River (42:25) in 20th.
The Jamesburg boys soccer team, coached by Adam Perdoni and Amy Clark, ended their season on Oct. 27 with a record of 7-1-1. The dedicated players included eighth-graders Diego Delgado, Tommy Herkert, Sean Illion, John Lomauro, Darwin Menendez, Michael Mitas, Joey Musa, Robert Phillip, Jack Rovira, Billy Springfield and Adam Yesaitis. The seventh-graders were Nick Bodall, Justin Boehne, Jordan Masters, Matthew Pilecki, Jake Raynor, Michael Vallese and Kenny Zimmer. The key to the team’s success was its strong defense, which allowed only seven goals in nine games. However, the team also managed to score 37 goals.
The fights at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Nov. 10 were a tremendous success, with several local fighters giving a great showing. In the main event, Robbie Cook, who represents the hall, defeated Aaron Walters (the 156-pound New Jersey state champion) in a close decision.
Fourteen wrestlers from the Sayreville recreation wrestling program entered the first-ever Marlboro Wrestling Tournament on Nov. 19, and four Sayreville wrestlers reached medals rounds. The tournament had more than 250 wrestlers from wrestling programs around New Jersey, and Sayreville made a good showing with wrestlers finishing in the top three in their weight classes. Eric Tsang took first place in Division I in the 80-pound weight class, while Gary Siriday took second in the Division 145-pound weight class.
In Division II, Jason Fischer took third place in the 138-pound weight class, and Shaun Redding finished second in the 143-pound division.
While medals were presented to the first three places, other wrestlers from Sayreville Recreation Wrestling finished near the top. Daniel Bergfeldt, Daniel Brereton, William Collier, Dominick Forcella, Glenn Lucas, Jesse Moat and Ian Paul, all competed at the Division I level, which was for wrestlers with one to three years experience. Division II wrestlers, which was for wrestlers with three to five years’ experience, were Tom Danielsen and Scott Poore, while Ed Skarszynski represented Division III for Sayreville, which was for wrestlers with more than five years’ experience.
