AHS student volunteers honored

ALLENTOWN — Senior Jayne Ruddiman has been named the Allentown High School volunteer of the year in the Prudential Spirit of Community awards program. In addition, Adam Tarbox and Meghan Goddard, both seniors, received certificates of merit for their volunteer community service.

Sponsored by Prudential and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the awards recognize outstanding community service, according to a press release from the high school.

Ruddiman is now eligible for the New Jersey youth volunteer of the year awards. Two state honorees, one middle level and one high school student, will each receive a $1,000 award, a silver medallion and a trip to Washington for recognition ceremonies with one parent or guardian.

Other honorees will receive bronze medallions or certificates of excellence. State honorees will be named in February.

Ruddiman is recognized for her volunteer work in the Allentown Public Library. Specifically, she began a project of updating the system of checking out library books, which is now computerized. Ruddiman has catalogued more than 2,000 books so far with this new process.

Tarbox is recognized for refurbishing a public gazebo as part of his Eagle Scout project, and Goddard is recognized for working on a Christmas tree delivery project for needy families and disabled children.
