My recent campaign for a seat on the Borough Council ended in a narrow, crushing loss. When that happens, the general tendency is to withdraw and reanalyze every step walked through our wonderful community. As I mentally retraced my steps, I began to feel a sense of accomplishment instead of remorse. I saw again the faces of friends and neighbors. Whether or not they voted for me was not the issue. What was important was their willingness to talk with me and discuss their vision and hopes for Keyport.
I visited every home in our community and sensed the great pride we all feel in what has been accomplished here. I began to feel exhilarated and was proud to have taken the time to run for public office. In addition, I became extremely proud to have been part of the campaign conducted by the Republican Party and my running mate, Councilwoman-elect Sue Ashmore. Congratulations!
I want to personally thank my wife for her support and the residents of Keyport who supported me and those who worked so hard for our party. Your efforts are greatly appreciated, whether your part was placing a sign on your property, helping with fund raising, or just taking time for a neighbor. Special thanks go to John Merla and June Atkins for their encouragement and support. You are the foundation for our efforts and should be proud of running an exemplary campaign.
People always ask, "Knowing what you know now, would you do it all again?" My response now is to urge anyone who has ever thought about running for office to do so. It takes time, dedication, and support from family and friends. It is important to become involved in the future of your town. And, win or lose, the civic pride you feel is tremendous.
