The Twisters, Aberdeen-Matawan’s under-10 girls travel soccer team, finished first in their flight with a record of seven wins, no losses and three ties. The girls ended their undefeated season on Nov. 19 with a tie against the West Orange Hurricanes, a team they previously defeated in a come-from-behind thriller in October.
Each of the Twisters’ 11 players logged significant playing time and contributed to the success of the team. Head Coach Ken Caporaso rotated his players freely, giving all the girls an opportunity to play different positions and develop a fuller understanding of the game. As the season progressed, each girl found her niche and settled into one or two primary positions. The Twisters are Katheryn Popowych, Lynsey McQuade, Leigh Corrigan, Michelle Heilmann, Kelly Caporaso, Nicole Vassallo, Nicole Barreto, Amanda Kaszuba, Jessica George, Nadine Busnar and Katie O’Connell. The Twisters, who committed to a twice-a-week schedule that began in late August, pulled out several victories in the final moments of their contests. The coaching staff, which includes assistant coaches Susan Caporaso, Sal Vassallo, and Myron Popowych, believe that the team’s rigorous practice and conditioning schedule gave them a leg up on their competition. The Twisters will resume training in late January for the spring 2001 season. Head coach Ken Caporaso expects the team to be moving up to a higher flight, based on their first-place finish.
