FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — Motorists should expect to see a traffic signal at the intersection of Wemrock and Gully roads by next spring.

Doug Sanders, assistant township administrator, said a contract for road work and the installation of the traffic signal has been awarded to Faigon Electric, Piscataway, for a total project price of $145,897.

He said work at the intersection — in front of the new Oakley Meadows housing development and in the vicinity of the Raintree and Wyndham Place townhouse developments — will begin as soon as possible, weather permitting.

Sanders said the roads will be restriped following improvements to both streets. He said at this time officials have no plans to close either road during any phase of the project.

He said the installation of the traffic light is the priority and will be the first phase of the project to be completed.

Also, expect traffic to slow down even more on Schibanoff Road. Members of the Township Committee voted at their Nov. 28 meeting to reduce the speed limit on the winding lane from 25 mph to 20 mph. Schibanoff Road connects Route 9 and Waterworks Road.

Before the unanimous vote, Mayor David Segal remarked that the back road is not well traveled and that the new speed limit is in keeping with the mostly local use of the road by those who live in the area.
