MARLBORO — The FBI is assisting local law enforcement officials with an investigation of a burglary that occurred at bank in the community.
According to police, sometime between the evening of Dec. 1 and the morning of Dec. 2, the Columbia Savings Bank in the Marlboro Plaza, Route 9, was broken into and burglarized.
The bank’s alarm was activated throughout the morning hours prior to the opening of the bank, according to police. Officers and bank personnel who arrived in the early morning hours to respond to the alarm did not enter the bank to investigate.
Police said that on Saturday morning a bank employee reported the burglary to authorities. According to police, $24,000 was reported stolen from an automatic teller machine in the bank.
According to Marlboro Police Lt. John W. Haines III, two individuals were involved in the break-in, which lasted a couple of hours. Haines said the perpetrators entered the bank through the roof, using a cutting device. He said they broke into the ATM from the inside of the building.
Haines said the bank employee was alerted to the problem when she experienced difficulty with the ATM machine on the morning of Dec. 2. She requested police on the scene before she entered the facility.
At press time an FBI spokesman had no comment on the investigation.
