EBHS students get unexpected break, thanks to old plumbing
Water main break cause for early
dismissal Monday
East Brunswick High School students got an unexpected vacation after a water main broke in the building’s LK wing Monday afternoon.
The water supply had to be shut off prompting school to be dismissed at 12:30 p.m., according to Jennifer Forbes, the district’s community relations director.
At that point only minor flooding had occurred.
The DKD excavating company and Trademark plumbing were called in to repair the damage.
Old age was said to be the reason for the burst in the 6-inch, cast-iron, fresh-water pipe, said Forbes.
A patch was placed on the pipe Monday night, and the water was turned back on yesterday morning.
As of press time yesterday, crews were working to flush out the pipes so that classes could resume today.
The school reported some damage to the rugs near where the break occurred, mostly due to muddy water.
"Other than that, we do not anticipate much in the way of damage costs," said Forbes.
"We do, however, expect to pay about $5,000 in labor charges," she said."
Since the school’s calendar accounts for inclement weather days, students are not expected to have to make up the missed days, Forbes said.
