Registration is being accepted for the Old Bridge ice hockey youth instructional program, held Saturday evenings beginning Jan. 13 from 6:15 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Old Bridge Sports Arena. The 10-week winter program will teach youngsters ages 5 through 12 the fundamentals of hockey, including stickhandling, passing and shooting. Participants are required to wear full equipment. The one-hour sessions are broken into two age groups: 5-8 and 9-13. The cost is $175 for Old Bridge residents and $200 for nonresidents. The Old Bridge Youth Athletic Association (OBYAA) Fighting Knights seventh-grade boys’ basketball team, playing in its first season in the Central Jersey Basketball League, won its opening game of the season, defeating Manalapan 48-41. The team will play a 14-game schedule in the league.

The Sayreville Recreation Wrestling program sent 15 of their top wrestlers from the sixth grade and under "A" Division into the annual Fords Bearcat Wrestling Tournament on Dec. 16. Scott Poore finished first in the 76-pound weight class, and teammate Chris Leva took first in the 80-pound weight class. Several wrestlers placed second in this exciting tournament including Gary Siriday (50 pounds), Jesse Moat (53 pounds), Dominick Forcella (56 pounds), Daniel Bergfeldt (60 pounds), Mike Greco (73 pounds), and Gino Shifano (90 pounds). There were also two third-place winners, Tyler Danielsen (100 pounds), and Matt Bellotti (110 pounds). The remainder of the team took home fourth-place medals, giving Sayreville 15 medals in all. They were Shawn Dahl (63 pounds), William Collier (67 pounds), Glenn Lucas (70 pounds), Eric Tsang (85 pounds) and Leeandrea Ventura (110 pounds). Sayreville Recreation Wrestling, now in its seventh year, has three different divisions this year. Head Coach Sean Bouchard runs the sixth grade and under "C" Division for first and second year wrestlers. Coach Mark Poore oversees the sixth grade and under "A" Division, consisting of wrestlers with more experience, as well as the recreation department’s seventh- and eighth-grade program. The season starts right after Thanksgiving and runs through mid-March, with wrestlers competing against other teams in and around central New Jersey and tournaments around the state. Practices are held three to five nights a week at the newly dedicated Arleth Elementary School gymatorium.

The Knights of Columbus Council No. 6345 of Kendall Park will be holding a basketball free-throw contest on Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium of St. Augustine’s school (located on Henderson Avenue, Kendall Park). The contest is for young men and women ages 10 through 14. Winners will advance to the district competition with potential for regional and state contests. The Monroe sixth-grade travel basketball team lost on Sunday to Montgomery by the score of 47-27. The Monroe team was led by the scoring of Mark Gulick with eight points and Greg Moyes with six. James Pullino and Mike Buffolino chipped in with eight rebounds apiece. The next game is Dec. 29 against Milltown.
