HELMETTA — The borough’s first strip mall opened for business last week.

Sutton Plaza, located at Old Forge Road and Main Street, features a food store, hair salon, and dry cleaner, which have already opened.

A Chinese restaurant, Japanese sushi bar and Italian pastry shop are among the businesses expected to move in at a later date.

According to Tax Assessor Ed Heindel, the building is currently assessed at $469,900.

At the current tax rate of $4.41 per $100 of assessed value, the complex will generate $20,722.59 each year in taxes, and that amount may increase.

"The building is not fully leased. When the building is full, I will reassess the value," said Heindel.

Larry Breza is the owner of Helmetta Foods, a convenience store in the complex. According to Breza, his store occupies 3,700 square feet including a 24-foot-long deli. Helmetta Foods also provides catering services.

"Sometime in late February we will be having a grand opening with samples from our deli and bakery," said Breza.
