Valley schools and some offices closed; Pennington and Hopewell meetings canceled

Unofficial word from Hopewell Township Republican Chairman William Cane indicates that the special Hopewell Township Commiteee election slated for Tuesday, March 6, has been postponed, because of weather conditions. No new date had been set as of 12:30 p.m. Monday.
Since the Mercer County Board of Elections and the Hopewell Township municipal offices are closed today, no official information about the special election that will determine who will take the open seat on the five-member committee is available. The candidates are: John Hart (Republican) and Fran Bartlett (Democrat).
"I think it’s probably a good thing it was canceled," Ms. Bartlett said
early this afternoon. "We wouldn’t want anybody to get hurt while they were
trying to get to the polls. We want an election that reflects the voters, not
the weather."
Mr. Hart said: "It’s frustrating. I hope the voters don’t lose interest
in the election, it’s already lasted so long. I’m done campaigning, though.
I’ve got a lot going on with my business and farm, and I have to attend to
that."
Hopewell Township municipal offices are closed, according to the taped message one hears when dialing 737-0605.
The regular meeting of Pennington Borough Council, slated for today, March 5, at 7:30 p.m, has been canceled due to the threat of a major snow, sleet and rain storm today, tonight and Tuesday.
The meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Borough Hall.
Pennington Borough municipal offices are open today, however.
Hopewell Borough Council also has canceled its March 5 meeting. The new date is March 12 at 7:30 p.m.
Hopewell Valley Regional schools also are closed today, taking away the first of three snow days built into the annual school district calendar.
