Candidate offers thoughts on schools

Letter to the editor

To the editor:
Having served in the South Brunswick community as an active volunteer on various boards and commissions for the past 10 years, I have made a decision to run for a seat on the school board. As a new parent and candidate, I am concerned about finding the right balance between education, quality of life and property taxes. This balance will require input from seniors, parents, teachers and school administrators. The fiscal bottom line, as our township grows, is that we must provide a quality education for our children and keep administrative costs and property taxes at a minimum.
I just received a copy of the proposed school budget for 2000-2001 in the mail last Friday. My plan is to closely study the budget line items and seek public input on their concerns with it. Moreover, the upcoming March 26, 2001, budget meeting at the high school is extremely important in providing public input to board members. Everyone should try to attend this meeting.
In addition, other issues of this campaign to discuss will be school redistricting; curricula, recruitment of quality teachers and services provided in maintaining the district will be on the chalkboard.
I believe that it is refreshing for all Type II school districts to have candidates and incumbents running for the district seats. This will be a fair campaign based solely on the issues. As we go forward in this campaign together, we must consider every possible option in finding this balance between education, quality of life and property taxes. We can solve these tasks and others that will come to our doorstep in the future as a team. Let’s work together.
