Pennington recreation group plans summer art program

The Pennington Parks and Recreation Commission’s plans for a children’s art program in Kunkel Park are well under way.
The program, "Art in the Park," will be taught by art instructors Carrie Fanning and Debbie Schlette. Ms. Fanning is the art teacher at Toll Gate Grammar School, and Ms. Schlette teachers art to prekindergartners at St. Matthew’s Little Leisure preschool program. Each session will also feature a surprise guest artist.
The summer program will take place in the pavilion at Kunkel Park, located at the intersection of King George Road and Park Avenue in Pennington Borough.
Children attending the camp will explore the world of art though a wide variety of media which may include watercolors, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, acrylics, colored pencils, collage, pastels, craypas and more.
The philosophy of "Art in the Park" is to help children learn modes of self-expression through the exploration of media, techniques, ideas and approaches. The park will provide the perfect peaceful, natural setting for an inspirational and educational curriculum.
"Art in the Park" will be held during the month of July in four one-week sessions. Camp will meet from 9 a.m. to noon. Each session will be open to children 5 to 12. The cost will be $135 per week for borough residents, $145 per week for non-borough residents. Because each session is limited to 30 students, a lottery will be held to fill the spots. Each family can fill out one application form to enable siblings to be placed in the same sessions. Pennington Borough residents will be given priority registration.
Application forms will be distributed to all Hopewell Valley grammar schools during the week of March 12. They also will be available at Pennington Borough Hall. The forms should be returned to Pennington Borough Hall by March 27. A lottery drawing will be held on March 28. Selected applicants will be notified by telephone on or before April 1.
